What Surrender Really Means (Alachua 3-30-08)

Page history last edited by Malati Manjari 16 years ago

Humorous lecture about faith, what it means to give up all other dharmas, three kinds of offerings which should never be given up and the glories of the Holy Name.

Listen

BG 18.66

sarva-dharman parityajya

mam ekam saranam vraja

aham tvam sarva-papebhyo

moksayisyami ma sucah

TRANSLATION

Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.

Acaryadeva explains how this verse can be misunderstood: Krsna doesn’t literally ask us to give up all other dharmas or occupations. A devotee should continue performing his normal duties and may appear to lead an ordinary life, but he understands and has faith that Krsna is everything and all he does is for Krsna. (Krsna das Kaviraja explains in CC what faith means:

'sraddha'-sabde -- visvasa kahe sudrdha niscaya

krsne bhakti kaile sarva-karma krta haya

(C.C. Madhya 22.62)

TRANSLATION: "Sraddha is confident, firm faith that by rendering transcendental loving service to Krsna one automatically performs all subsidiary activities. Such faith is favorable to the discharge of devotional service."

Since this is a matter of consciousness we cannot judge devotees from their external behaviour (-Rupa Goswami). In this age Krsna appears in His Holy Name and the Holy Name can be chanted in all circumstances.
